November snow in the NEK

It has been snowing in Island Pond most of the day., but with the temperature just above freezing it melted as soon as it hit the ground.  Around 4PM the temperature dropped below 32° and it started to stick to the car and grassy surfaces here in IP.  In the higher elevations of the Northeast Kingdom it remained below freezing all day. In those places a few inches of snow did accumulate.

I did setup the snow stake in front of the webcam this afternoon just in case we get more than expected overnight.

Snow did accumulate in some of the higer elevations of the NEK today. One such place was at a friends house in Walden, VT. Here’s an image from his webcam from this afternoon.

Cool Mornings

The past several mornings have been on the chilly side throughout the NEK of VT. This mornings low of 40.5 F was the coldest we’ve had here in Island Pond since June 22 when the temperature dropped to 38 degrees. On the the plus side the last few days have been beautiful with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. The NWS forecast is calling for increasing clouds tonight with showers tomorrow. After the showers move through more cool air is on the way. Highs on Friday will only be in the low 60s throughout the Northeast Kingdom. We may even see a few 50s for highs in the cooler places like Coles Pond and other locations at elevation. Saturday morning will probably have most locations in the 30s. I wouldn’t be surprised to see scattered frost in some of the sheltered valleys.

I’ll end this post with a photo of the Mt Washington Hotel that I took yesterday while in NH.

Cold front ushers in drier air

The past several days haven’t been exceptionally hot, but dew points in the low to mid 60s have made it kind of muggy in the NEK. We’ve also seen some spotty heavy rain and thunderstorms in some areas. On Monday morning I was woken by a passing thunderstorm at 5:30 AM. The storm dropped .79 inches of rain here in Island Pond. I spoke to a friend that lives near Coles Pond in Walden and he said that they only had a few sprinkles. So, the storms are certainly hit or miss. I was expecting to see more rain last night as the cold front passed, but things were faily calm with a few spotty showers in the region.  Here in Island Pond we only got .01″ of precipitation. Today has been partly sunny with temps in the upper 60s. The dew points have also been falling since the cold front passed through.

The uupcoming forcast is calling for unsettled weather through tomorrow with a chance of showers. The weekend I

is looking fantastic with sunny skies and temps in the mid to upper 70s throughout the Northeast Kingdom.

Here’s a recent image from our webcam. If you look at the grass in the foreground you will notice several yellow leaves. I’m not sure what is going on,  but several of our birch trees have been dropping leaves over the past several days.
