Cold front ushers in drier air

The past several days haven’t been exceptionally hot, but dew points in the low to mid 60s have made it kind of muggy in the NEK. We’ve also seen some spotty heavy rain and thunderstorms in some areas. On Monday morning I was woken by a passing thunderstorm at 5:30 AM. The storm dropped .79 inches of rain here in Island Pond. I spoke to a friend that lives near Coles Pond in Walden and he said that they only had a few sprinkles. So, the storms are certainly hit or miss. I was expecting to see more rain last night as the cold front passed, but things were faily calm with a few spotty showers in the region.  Here in Island Pond we only got .01″ of precipitation. Today has been partly sunny with temps in the upper 60s. The dew points have also been falling since the cold front passed through.

The uupcoming forcast is calling for unsettled weather through tomorrow with a chance of showers. The weekend I

is looking fantastic with sunny skies and temps in the mid to upper 70s throughout the Northeast Kingdom.

Here’s a recent image from our webcam. If you look at the grass in the foreground you will notice several yellow leaves. I’m not sure what is going on,  but several of our birch trees have been dropping leaves over the past several days.

July 30th update

While some of New England was dealing with severe storms on Sunday and Monday,  we just had a decent rainfall of 1.26″ will some thunder and lightning here. Revere, MA wasn’t as fortunate as they had a tornado come through on Monday. Yesterday,  July 29th,  was on the cool side throughout the Northeast Kingdom with a high of only 65.6° in Island Pond, VT. Today started out with a low of 43 in Island Pond, 42 at Coles Pond and 41 in Wheelock. Temperatures have rebounded to the upper 60s to low 70s in the NEK.

The rest of the week looks to be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers.  Highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.

I’ll end this post with the current image from our Webcam.

Heat and humidity give way to thunderstorms

The heat and humidity from the past several days will be nothing but a memory as a cold front moves through later today.  There could be some strong storms out ahead of the front.  The timing of the storms in the NEK appears to be early to mid afternoon.  Should you be outside when one of these comes through,  seek shelter immediately.  After the front clears the area,  we will return to more comfortable summer weather right into the weekend.
