Fall Foliage Update 9/13/16

With peak foliage here in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont just around the corner I thought I would do a quick update on how things are going. The last two mornings my weather station has recorded low temps of around 40°F. A friend of mine in Walden, VT recorded a low of 37°F yesterday morning.

The forecast is calling for the coldest air of the season later in the week. There was even some talk of a chance of frost in the cooler mountain valleys Thursday morning.  Here’s the NWS five day forecast for Island Pond, VT

Warm in the NEK

Temperatures have been unseasonably warm around here for the past few months. We have had a few shots of cold air, but temperatures have been above to well above normal. Yesterday, December 11, 2015, we had a high of  51.6°F.

Unfortunately for snow lovers these warm temperatures have melted most of the snow that fell at the beginning of the month. There isn’t any snow left here in Island Pond. However as of this morning there was still an inch or two left at elevations above 1500′ in parts of the Northeast Kingdom.

It’s starting to look like we may be in for a brown Christmas this year if we don’t see a change in our weather pattern over the next week or so.

As most of you know, our Webcam here in Island Pond points at two bird / squirrel feeders. We also have three other bird feeders that aren’t in the webcam view. Needless to say, we enjoy watching the birds. I also enjoy photographing the birds that visit our yard. I hadn’t been taking many photos over the past year or two. But over the past few weeks I’ve gotten back in to it, and I’ve been having fun again.

Photographing birds takes a ton of patience, and a lot of luck. The wild birds are usually very quick and can get spooked very easy. I’d much rather take photos of birds in their natural environment, but sometimes they land on something man made like the top of a lamp post, and you can’t resist taking the shot.

I hope everyone out there enjoys this type of post because I have a feeling they may become more frequent here on the bog.
